Four Things To Consider When Choosing A Motorcycle Racing Jacket
If you enjoy riding motorcycles and feel that you would like to start racing them, be sure that you invest in the right jacket to provide yourself with the protection that you need. It can be hard to know what to look for when buying a jacket if you have never bought a racing jacket before. The guide below walks you through a few things to look for when buying a racing jacket to wear when racing motorcycles.
Consider the Material
You want to be sure to select a racing jacket that is made of leather. Leather will protect your skin from getting road rash if you were to put the bike down while you are racing. Be sure that the sleeves of the jacket are long enough to cover your wrists when you bend your arms while driving. Check to make sure that the leather is properly processed so that it is very breathable as well. This will keep you from overheating when you wear it. The tag should specify that the leather is designed to be breathable.
Consider the Weight
When searching for a racing jacket, be sure that you choose one that is lightweight and allows you to easily move while you are wearing it. You will need to be able to turn the bike with ease, and being restricted by a tight-fitting racing jacket could impede upon your ability to drive properly.
Consider Elbow Pads
When searching for the perfect jacket, search for one that has elbow pads that are made of Kevlar or other very strong material. If you put the bike down, at least one of your elbows will hit the ground, and the elbow pads will help protect them from being badly injured.
Consider a Spine Guard
There are also jackets on the market that have spine guards built into them. The spine guard is a protective guard that is often made from Kevlar as well, that goes down the center of the jacket where your spine is located. If you were to get into an accident on the bike without a spine guard on, your spine is more likely to be injured from the impact or from sliding across the asphalt.
Once you have found the perfect jacket for you, be sure to take the time to try it on and move around in it. You want to be sure that all of the padding sits where it is supposed to sit on your body to ensure that you are as safe and comfortable as you can be during your races.
